The DVSA has introduced new guidance around Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring (EBPM), which allows fleets to track braking performance digitally, instead of relying solely on traditional roller brake tests.

Instead of taking the vehicle in for a test a few times a year, the system collects data as the vehicle is out on the road — flagging any issues as they arise and building a picture of brake performance over time.

From January 2025, changes to EU regulations will require vehicles operating internationally to upgrade to Smart Tachograph Version 2 (V2). What’s Changing?

The new regulations mean that many vehicles will need to retrofit their tachographs to the latest technology. This applies to trucks, buses, and certain commercial vehicles. Here’s what you need to know about the deadlines:

Key Deadlines

  1. By 31 December 2024
    Vehicles with analogue or early digital tachographs (first registered before 14 June 2019) must upgrade to Smart Tachograph V2.

  2. By 18 August 2025
    Vehicles already fitted with Smart Tachograph Version 1 (registered between 15 June 2019 and 20 August 2023) must be upgraded to Version 2.

  3. By 1 July 2026
    Light commercial vehicles and vans weighing over 2.5 tonnes must have Smart Tachograph V2 installed. This expands the previous requirement, which applied only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Failure to comply with the new regulations could result in fines of up to €10,000 or more. Non-compliance also increases the risk of losing contracts, reputational damage, and liability issues.
