From April 2025, the way operators monitor and test brakes on HGVs and trailers is changing — and it’s good news if you’re looking to cut costs and reduce downtime.
The DVSA has introduced new guidance around Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring (EBPM), which allows fleets to track braking performance digitally, instead of relying solely on traditional roller brake tests.
So, What Is EBPM?
EBPM is a way of using onboard systems and telematics to constantly monitor how your vehicle’s brakes are performing. Instead of taking the vehicle in for a test a few times a year, the system collects data as the vehicle is out on the road — flagging any issues as they arise and building a picture of brake performance over time.
Why Is This Happening?
The main reason is safety — continuous monitoring gives a more accurate view of how brakes are performing in real-world conditions, not just on a test bed. But it also comes with a major operational benefit:
Fleets using a compliant EBPM system may now only need one physical brake test per year, instead of four.
That’s a big saving in time, effort, and money.
